Office hours: M-F 7:15 am - 2:52 p.m. Mrs. Butler serves as Special Education Department Leader and Coordinator of the District's 504 Committee. In addition to the more traditional role of educational consultant, she completes psychological evaluations, facilitates special education programs, assists in developing post-secondary plans, counsels students individually, and participates in the development of Individualized Educational Plans as well as 504 Accommodation Planning when Appropriate. Special Education Information
Special Education Contact: Melissa Butler(237) The Special Education Department at Central High School District of Westosha served students who require an individualized/specialized approach to education due to an identified disabling condition such as those specified under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). Students who are eligible must qualify for special education and, one qualified, have an Individualized Educational Plan(IEP) developed at least annually. Examples of disabling conditions include the following: Cognitive Disability, Specific Learning Disability, Emotional Behavioral Disability, Speech/Language, Autism, Other Health Impairment, Visual Impairment, Orthopedic Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, Significant Developmental Delay, and Visual Impairment. While the majority of students are served on campus, some students may require off-site educational facilities. Students referred for special education must: 1)receive a complete evaluation as is authorized by parent/guardian; 2)have a handicapping condition; 3)demonstrate a need for special education; 4)have an Individualized Educational Plan developed at least annually; 5)and have written parent/guardian permission for program placement. Special education referrals can come from a number of sources: parents, previous schools, teachers, community sources/outside agencies, and students. 504 Contact: Dr. Scott Pierce,Superintendent (222) Students who may be considered for eligibility under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 must demonstrate a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activity, have a record of such impairment, or is regarded as having such impairment. Major life activities are those such as caring for one's self, preforming manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working. Section 504 is primarily a regular education initiative. For individuals found to qualify, and Individualized Accommodation Plan is developed to facilitate regular education participation. Links
