SMART stands for Students Modeling a Research Topic. In this program high school students are paired with active researchers in the fields of biochemistry or molecular biology to create a 3D model of a protein of interest. Students from Central have worked with professors from UW-Parkside in studying a protein responsible for the assembly of mitochondrial DNA, Marquette University in studying proteins that regulate appetite and synthesize ammonia, the Medical College of Wisconsin in studying a protein that is responsible for nuclear import, as well as a project lead of Pfizer Inc studying a breast cancer drug target. In the course of working with these researchers we have toured their labs and conducted experiments. Students in SMART read primary research papers, code a 3D model, and present their work at an annual poster session.
