July 2021

Dear Parents and Students:

I am extremely excited to welcome you to the 2021-22 school year. For those of you returning, welcome back, and for our new students and families, we are excited for you to join the Westosha Central learning community. The 2021-22 school year is going to be great; we will be returning to a five-day week for instruction and all of the normal high school activities that make Central a great place for students.

The 2021-22 school year will be filled with amazing opportunities for all students. The belief at Central is  that all students can learn and that all students will find success. We care about each and every student at CHS and we will work hard to build meaningful relationships with each and every student. Our school will continue to be a safe place where students are engaged, challenged to meet the standards necessary for college or a career, and where innovation and creativity are encouraged and nurtured.

The district is committed to continuous growth; we  celebrate the many great things happening but are always looking for areas to enhance, grow, and explore. The district will focus on the following goals for 2021-22 which include, but are not limited to:

  1. Return to a five-day in person instructional week following the 2020-21 COVID year. We will be in school five days a week in 2021-22 and masks will be optional. We are working to finalize a change to our contact tracing and quarantine procedures; these procedures, along with any other protocols, will be communicated prior to the start of the school year.

  2. In May, the district began work on the facility upgrades and additions provided to us by the community’s support in the passing of the April 2021 referendum. The construction process is comprehensive, touching almost every square foot in the building, but we are developing a plan to limit the impact on students and learning. Students should see no major disruptions in the 2021-22 school year.

  3. Year two of our Learning Management System (LMS) Schoology. The LMS allows teachers a central place to house curriculum, learning resources, and facilitate the learning process. Students have access to the LMS for assignments, tutorials, and instructional support materials. We are excited for year two as we continue to use Schoology to help our instruction for students.

  4. The 2020-21 school year placed significant restrictions on collaborative work opportunities for students as social distancing was in place for much of the year. Although we will still be aware of COVID protocols and procedures, we will be able to re-focus on providing  innovative learning opportunities for students. We will spend time working with our staff on fostering innovative instructional strategies to promote collaboration and hands-on learning opportunities for students in and outside of the classroom.

  5. Implementation of Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  PLTW  is a nationally recognized curriculum that provides transformative learning experiences for students that focuses on hands-on problem-solving learning activities. Students participating in PLTW classes will be empowered to use collaboration, math and science skills, and critical thinking to solve real world problems and applications. In 2021-22, we will be offering PLTW classes in the areas of engineering and biomedical science with plans to expand offering in years to come.

  6. Increasing the social-emotional support for students at Central. While we offer many great things, we continue to explore and implement new ideas.

Our goal, as defined in our school district mission in part, is to, “…ensure all students acquire the knowledge, skills, and character to thrive as contributing members of a global society”.  With your help we can accomplish our goals. We look forward to working with your family in 2021-22 and beyond.
