Please welcome Jamie McCann, a dedicated educator and coach who is excited to join our Westosha Central High School!

About Jamie
I’m a proud mom of two amazing kids, and family is at the heart of everything I do. As an educator, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students at both the elementary and high school levels, which has given me a strong understanding of students’ needs at different stages of their learning journey.

Coaching Experience
In addition to teaching, I’m a passionate softball coach. I love helping young athletes build confidence, develop strong teamwork, and grow their skills both on and off the field, and I strive to create a positive, encouraging environment where everyone feels supported.

Why Westosha?
I’m truly excited to build new relationships with students, staff, and families and to become part of such an amazing school culture. I look forward to partnering with you to support our students and make this a wonderful year for everyone.

Youth Apprenticeship, also known as YA, is a work-based learning program that allows high school juniors and seniors to gain paid, hands on experience in a career field while earning high school credit and developing skills that employers value.

Student work with local employers, receive structured on the job training, and connect classroom learning to real world careers. Many participants graduate with valuable industry experience, professional connections, and a clearer path toward entering the workforce, military service, technical education, or college.

Why does it matter?
✔️ Develop career-ready skills through real work experience.
✔️ Earn while you learn.
✔️ Explore careers before making postsecondary decisions.
✔️ Build a resume with meaningful experience before graduation.
✔️ Help strengthen our local workforce by connecting students with area employers.

Program Requirements:
- Open to eligible juniors and seniors.
- Students must complete a minimum of 450 paid work hours with an approved employer.
- Students receive related classroom instruction aligned to their career pathway.
- Employers provide supervised, competency based training through the experience.

Interested?
Whether you're a student looking to jump start your career or an employer interested in developing the next generation of skills professionals, we'd love to connect with you!

Contact Mr. Popanda, Assistant Principal of CTE & Community Engagement, to learn more about becoming a Youth Apprentice or partnering as a host employer.

This spring, WCHS received a grant to create a pollinator patch. Students and staff wrapped up the school year by planting seeds and later transplanting seedlings near the pond along Falcon Way.

Just one month in, the pollinator patch is thriving. The grass visible in the photo is whitegrass, which helps prevent erosion and suppress weeds. The science department has been hard at work keeping everything watered during this recent heat wave.

A little background on why and what a pollinator patch can do:
1. Convert ~ 1000 square feet of turf grass back to native prairie vegetation
2. Showcase best practices for shoreline plantings for lakefront property and stormwater pond owners.
3. Reduce areas of turf grass to mown by Central HS
4. Capture overland stormwater flow and pollutants prior to entering the stormwater pond, supporting better water quality in Hooker Lake.
5. Prevent phosphorus loading (and subsequent algae blooms) in the pond from grass clippings
6. Provide students with a hands-on restoration opportunity
7. Support a healthy ecosystem for pollinators, birds, and downstream fish populations
8. Improve the aesthetics of Central High School’s natural areas
